SCOTT BROWN, director:  In 1984, after graduating from the University of Washington with a degree in Music Education, Mr. Brown became a part of the music program at Roosevelt.  He directs the Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Marching Band, Jazz Band, and Vocal Jazz and spends many evenings and frequent weekends rehearsing, performing, meeting, or traveling with one group or another. He is a versatile and active Trombonist and member of the Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra and Latin Expression, Salsa! In 2000, Mr. Brown was the first ever winner of the John Stanford Award for Excellence in Art Education. This past year he was the recipient of the 2001 Christa McAuliffe Washington State Award for Excellence in Education.  He has also won the Nordstrom Award for Promoting Cultural Diversity, and the Alliance for Education A+ Award. Beyond his resume though, Scott Brown simply works wonders with students, whether in class, during performances, or on the marching field.  He brings high level enthusiasm, a passion for teaching and an expectation for excellence to Roosevelt Music.

 

 

The music program at Roosevelt High School is one of the most diverse and challenging in Washington State. Our ensembles consistently demonstrate musical excellence and enthusiasm in performances throughout the world. The program is designed to meet the musical and social needs of many different levels of musician within performing groups offering a wide range of styles and formats. Rough Rider Marching Band- “Music, Marching and Madness!” The spirit of Roosevelt High School, the Marching Band meets after school on Tuesday and Thursday. The Band performs halftime shows at all home football games and competes in Marching Band competitions. Membership is open to all Band musicians regardless of grade level. The year begins with Fall Band Camp during one of the first weekends in September. This is the best way to get involved and get to know other musicians at Roosevelt.

 

Concert (Cadet) Band- Meets daily during 6th period throughout the year. This ensemble is open to all incoming Freshman Band students. No audition is required. Important concepts are taught and reinforced. The group performs at concerts and festivals. Members are encouraged to participate in Marching Band and Basketball Pep Band. Helps ease the transition into high school.

 

Symphonic (Concert) Band- Meets daily during 4th period throughout the year. This ensemble is by audition only. Freshman may audition for the group during the first week of school in the Fall, but should register for Cadet Band. Advanced-level ensemble with emphasis on demanding Band Literature in a variety of styles. The group performs at concerts and festivals. Members are encouraged to participate in Marching Band and Basketball Pep Band.

 

Jazz Lab- The second jazz band at Roosevelt. Meets throughout the year, after school on Mondays and Wednesdays. This ensemble is also by audition. The Jazz Lab will perform at numerous concerts and competitive festivals, especially during second semester.

 

Jazz Band- The top jazz band at Roosevelt. Meets throughout the year during 5th period as a regular class. This is an advanced-level, audition-only ensemble. Auditions for Jazz Bands and Vocal Jazz Rhythm-Section take place the last full week of summer vacation at Roosevelt High School. A high degree of skill and commitment are required to participate. Numerous performances and trips.

 

Vocal Jazz- A select group of 16 singers and a rhythm section. Meets throughout the year during 2nd period. Auditions for singers take place in the Spring of the previous school year. Rhythm Section players audition in the summer. A serious “Jazz Band for Voices”, the group performs at numerous festivals throughout the year. A high degree of skill and commitment are required to participate. Minimum full-year participation.

 

Symphony Orchestra- This is a large performing group using symphonic instrumentation. This ensemble performs symphonic works in concerts and competitions. Each spring, this group performs for a large gala “Waltz” event. Students must be prepared to attend after-school rehearsals, evening and weekend concerts, festivals and competitions. Freshman will be admitted by audition only.

 

Concert Orchestra- In this ninth-grade class, students study orchestra literature. This class is to develop the skills of tuning, rhythm, tonal production and rehearsal performance discipline. Students receive experience in public performance as well as music festival experience.

 

Chamber Orchestra- This select group of 10-15 string players performs chamber literature from all stylistic periods. Each spring, the Chamber group performs for the Spring Musical Production. Students must be prepared to attend after-school rehearsals, evening and weekend concerts, festivals and competitions.

 

Piano Class- This is an all-level class for instruction in Piano. Students will learn the fundamentals of written music and will perform for the class in recitals every two weeks. There will be written examinations on Music Theory in addition to the piano recitals. The class may be taken numerous times as long as skill level is increasing.
