My student is a freshman. What Band does
he or she sign up for?
All 9th grade students should sign up for Cadet Band. It is the
only "required" band. However, 9th graders are
encouraged to join the Marching Band.
Which students are in the Rider Marching Band?
Students from the Cadet, Symphonic, and Jazz Bands can
participate in Marching Band. Some Orchestra students
participate too. A description
of the Roosevelt HS music program is
available at this site.
Does my student have to audition for Marching Band?
There are no auditions for Marching Band. Only the Jazz
Bands have auditions.
My student is not sure about Marching Band. Does he or
she have to
participate?
The Marching Band is extra curricular activity and many 9th
graders are hesitant to join unless they have seen how much fun
their older brother or sister had playing in the band. Mr. Brown
requests that all freshman attend Fall Band Camp to see for
themselves what Marching Band is all about. If after Fall Band
Camp the student is still not convinced, they may elect to not participate,
but this is rare since most kids become instantly engaged
and are glad to be part of a fun and enthusiastic group of
students at Roosevelt High School.
Can parents of freshmen chaperone at band camp?
Absolutely! Freshman parents are encouraged to come to Fall Band
Camp too. It’s the best way to see and experience what the Rough
Rider Band is all about. Chaperones are needed throughout the
school year for other Band trips.
What activities does the Marching Band play at
besides football games?
The Rough Rider Marching Band/Pep Band also plays at pep
rallies, basketball games, and in parades. Their
calendar is
posted on the web and there is an email list. These are
two best ways to keep up with
band activities throughout the year.
How do I get on the Band email list?
Contact a Band Booster officer to get your name
added to the Band information list. Being on the list is the
best way to get last minute information on upcoming
activities. You can remove yourself from the list at any time by
sending an email to the address posted at the bottom of a Band
email.
How do I get a Marching Band uniform?
Uniform fittings are made once a year before school begins in
the fall. Uniforms are assigned students for the entire year.
Fittings are also made during class time early in the fall for
those who cannot come to the summer fittings. We can also fit
students before an event, but we try to minimize the number of
last minute fittings that are needed.
When and where is marching practice?
Marching Band Practice is held on Tuesday and Thursday from 2:30
to 4:00 pm at Roosevelt High School. Practices start in
mid-September and conclude at the end of October.
Is there an activity bus?
Buses transport students from RHS to football games at Memorial
Stadium.
My student really wants to participate in Jazz Band. How does
Jazz Lab practice fit in with marching practice?
Jazz Lab practices are on Monday and Wednesday during the
Marching Band season. Adjustments may be made after October when
Marching Band is over. Many students participate in both the
Jazz Lab and Marching Bands.
My student cannot attend practices after school because of a
sports activity conflict. Can they still be in Marching
Band?
Yes!! Marching Band is the group of about 100 kids who play
during the football games in the stands. They are all in uniform
but only a subset of these students performs in the field show
during halftime. The field show group varies between 64 and 80
kids and they are the ones that practice after school
Tuesday/Thursday in the fall.
Do I need to get a Band uniform if my student is only playing
in the stands?
Yes. The uniform consists of jacket, pants, shako (hat), shoes,
plume, and gloves. All items are provided by the Band Boosters
and students are asked to take special care with these items.
Uniforms are stored at school and are not to go home. Students
are asked to purchase a Band t-shirt and RHS cap and to wear
their own black socks with the uniform.
Can a student participate in cadet band and orchestra at the
same time?
All brass and woodwind musicians sign up for the concert (cadet)
bands, but those students that want to play with the Orchestra,
practice with the Band 3 times a week and with the Orchestra the
other 2 days per week. All string players should sign up for
Orchestra.
